Delve into the world of Japanese sake and explore the flavorful partnership of sake and cheese!  Enjoy this unique program introducing the qualities of Japanese sake, presented by Paul Tanguay, accredited sake sommelier based in New York City.  Two sessions, hosted by the Japan-America Society of Indiana (JASI) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO Chicago), will be held on Monday, October 29th.  Sake and cheese products will be provided by Republic National Distributing Company and Goose the Market.

The sake-tasting sessions will be held in the new Japan Culture Center of the Japan-America Society of Indiana, located in Union Station, 300 South Meridian St., Indianapolis.  A private session for restaurateurs, chefs, mixologists and other food and beverage professionals will be held in the afternoon, followed by an evening program open to the public.

The programs will feature Paul Tanguay, considered one of the preeminent sake authorities in the United States.  Paul earned his accreditation from the American Sommelier Association and he completed the first-ever English language sake sommelier certificate from the Sake Education Council.  Based in New York City, Paul’s more than 25 years in the restaurant industry have taken him around the world.   He has been featured in multiple national publications and has made several television appearances.  Paul was the winner of the 2006 Eastern U.S. Sake Sommelier Competition and ranked among the top ten at the 2006 World Sake Sommelier Competition in Tokyo, Japan.

Japanese sake (pronounced “sah-kay”) is only slightly stronger than wine.  It is made from a brewing process using fermented rice, yet it is classified neither as a wine nor or a beer.  With 1/3 of the acidity of wine and low in histamines, it is less likely to produce a hangover than some other alcoholic beverages, contrary to misperception.  Sake can be consumed chilled or hot, depending on the type.  There are a vast variety of locally produced sakes in Japan.

The program for industry professionals will take place from 2:00 to 3:30 PM.  Registration can be found at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/101-sake-educational-session-in-indianapolis-tickets-50446604151

For general public, the sake program will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 PM with an admission price of $30.  Registration can be found at https://japanindiana.wufoo.com/forms/jasi-sake-tasting/
